The Pirates of Penzance
WS Gilbert and A Sullivan
3rd to 6th April 2019
Jubilee Theatre
Following our sell-out run of HMS Pinafore at Gosforth Civic Theatre, Gosforth Musical Society continue the celebrations of our 90th anniversary by presenting this production of The Pirates of Penzance.
The Pirates of Penzance is arguably now the most popular of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. It has an interesting history however, in that the piece had its first real production in New York on 31st December 1879, and could therefore possibly described as a genuine Broadway Show!
The plot of the opera has a typical topsy turvy Gilbertian twist, telling the story of Frederic who feels duty bound to report the band of Pirates he has been apprenticed to for 21 years to the authorities and bring them to justice. Developments occur which make his sense of duty turn on its head, and much delightful silliness ensues.
This show has lost none of its charm and wit in the 140 years since it was first produced, and one of the most tightly written of the Savoy Operas, with not a wasted word or note, displaying the true genius of both W S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.
There will be one interval of 20 minutes.
